Historic Seattle Tour
May 22, 2008 – Dearborn House, Historic Seattle
Luci Baker Johnson, Manager of Volunteers & Events for Historic Seattle, provided the membership with a truly excellent presentation and tour of the Dearborn House on First Hill. The program afforded Seattle Area Archivist members a detailed overview of Historic Seattle’s programs and services as well as organizational history and future initiatives. Among the highlights of the meeting was the opportunity to view Historic Seattle’s Resource Center which is still under construction. Upon completion the Resource Center will act as another potent advocacy and outreach tool for Historic Seattle and will be a boon for the Seattle community. Historic Seattle’s mission to educate, advocate, and preserve vital and threatened historic buildings and architectural artifacts is well-served by its highly energetic staff who focus on programming, events, administration, and education.
Seattle Public Schools Archives
February 21, 2008 – Seattle Public Schools Archives
Eleanor Toews and her assistant Lisa Cohen hosted the Seattle Area Archivists Winter meeting in the Seattle Public Schools’ Archives. Toews, who has been the Seattle Public Schools Archivist for the past 30 years shared her experiences developing the Archives and also discussed the unique nature of the records center and archives environment in the Seattle Public School Archives. Toews and Cohen presented highlights from the unique collection composed of various materials from schools throughout the Seattle area and lead a tour through the facility.
Washington State Jewish Archives
November 5, 2007 – Special Collections Division, University of Washington
Manuscript Curator Emeritus and one of the founding members of Seattle Area Archivists, Karyl Winn discussed the Jewish History Project, which began in 1968 and grew into the largest Jewish archives in the Pacific Northwest. Steven Wright of the Winthrop Group joined Winn to talk about his work as the archivist for the Jewish Historical Society and its long-term partnership with the University of Washington Special Collections Division.
